Chapter 10

“It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen” Wolfgang stated to the troops as he was asked how things in surgery “but also somewhat disturbing at the same” he concluded.  After the surgery had been completed on Cadet Schwartz’s new leg, Wolfgang thought that the young lad would just be limping with the new leg, but after he regained his strength in post-op “it was like his leg had never been lost in the first place” Wolfgang concluded.
When he was done being surprised by the results of Cadet Schwartz’s operation, he’d thought he find out where the troops were billeted and thought he find a place for him there.  When he was told which way to go, he immediately jogged his way to the barracks and found it outside near the castle entrance.  The barracks was pretty much the same as where he had been billeted before in other facilities, except for the fact that the beds looked more comfortable.  When he had found the barracks, some of the men where happy to see him and they then decided to show him to the mess hall/tavern, on the other side of the castle entrance yard.
“So it’s true that Schwartz got his leg back?” one of the soldiers asked quizzically.  “Well, not entirely” the soldiers had a look of confusion as he said that.  “You see, the doctors couldn’t completely save his left leg, so they had to saw it off” the soldiers cringed at that very mention of that.  “But, the replacement they had for him was so sophisticated looking; I had a hell of a time trying to figure out until they started attaching it to his leg.  As they were operating on him, they were explaining how the process worked.”

“We’re going to attach the nerves to the artificial leg that you see here” Dr. Kaminski explained to the cadet who was lying on the operating table.  Wolfgang had been watching and listening to the doctor from the observation area overlooking the operating room.  “Will he be able to ever ride a horse again?” Wolfgang asked the Doctor through something that the orderlies called an intercom.
“When the surgery is complete, he’ll be able to dance a jig if he wanted too” Dr. Schreiber joked. A few chuckles could be heard from the orderlies in the operating room.  “But seriously, he will be able to ride again.  Other than losing your original leg, there should be no problem with you after the operation, but you’ll need to remain around the hospital for observation” Dr. Schreiber explained.
“You mean you want to make sure that my leg works perfectly?” Cadet Schwartz asked just as the anesthesia mask was being put on him.  “You are correct young man” Dr. Kaminski “Now, please count backwards from ten young man.”  Cadet Schwartz began counting from ten to nine and before he could reach six he was asleep.  “Now let’s begin, orderly hand me the saw” Dr. Kaminski asked.  Wolfgang began sweating as the doctor began sawing away at the unconscious cadet’s left leg.  Blood started pouring out and Wolfgang cringed.
When the bloody task was done and the corporal was able to prevent himself from passing out, they took the sawed off leg and put it into a large glass container filled with some kind of liquid.  “This liquid is formaldehyde, it will preserve his leg for study” Dr. Schreiber explained.  “Why would they need to do that” Wolfgang asked himself.  “Now” Dr. Kaminski stated “Let’s get down to the real business.  Orderly, please bring me the nerve connector.”  That being said, one of the nurses stepped out of the room briefly and then came back with a strange looking device.
The thing looked like an empty, metallic cup that looked like it could fit around someone’s leg.  “The nerves are hard to see from the naked eye, so we created a series of microscopic needles, which will automatically seek and connect to the nerves” Dr. Schreiber explained.  “This part will be inside the artificial leg and when it’s attached, the connection between the nerves and the leg will be complete.  Wolfgang was still confused, but it didn’t matter to him.  As long as the young cadet got another chance to walk again, he was fine.

“Christ, Wolfgang, I sure as hell am not getting any sleep tonight” one of the troopers said sounding queasy.  “You wanted the details, I gave them to you” Wolfgang said between sips of ale.  “I’ve seen my share of blood” one soldier added in “it’s the whole science thing that’s going to keep up, because I am confused as hell.  “Excuse me Corporal Freidan?” A black clad trooper asked.  “That’s me” Wolfgang responded.
“Lady Schreiber has requested your presence for tonight’s dinner with his lordship and the general” the trooper said plainly.  “She requested me? As in a date requested?” Wolfgang said quizzically.  The trooper shrugged “She didn’t put it that way, she said that I should inform you and send for you immediately” the trooper stated plainly.  “Well as you can see trooper, I am not exactly dressed for the occasion” Wolfgang replied.  “Not to worry Corporal, the doctor had a suit tailor made for you.”  Wolfgang looked even more confused than ever.
“How the hell did she manage to have a tailor made suit for me?” he asked with an even more confused look.  “I have no idea of that sir” the trooper stated plainly “but I was told to bring you to her quarters immediately, so that you could change for this evening.”  Wolfgang was completely surprised by this strange turn of events.  “Come on corporal, maybe you’ll get lucky tonight” one of the soldiers grinned.  Wolfgang shot a cold look at the man and he immediately turned back to his card game.
“She is one strange woman.  What women with a career as prominent as hers want with a grunt corporal like me?” He asked himself these questions.  “Sir, if you don’t mind, she’s waiting” the trooper said.  When Wolfgang stuck his head out, he saw that she was waiting for him out in the main yard.  She waved with a smile on her face.  Wolfgang grinned “Well I mustn’t keep a lady waiting, now can I?” Wolfgang said to the trooper.  The trooper grinned “No sir, you cannot.”  That being said Wolfgang headed over to the large fountain that serves as the center area of the main entrance.
“I’ve been waiting for you” Hilda said with a smile as she walked up to him close enough to almost smell her fresh breathe.  “I take it you’ll be joining me tonight?” she replied pleasantly.  “Why yes indeed pretty lady” Wolfgang said with a smiled.  Hilda blushed “That’s wonderful, now let’s go and get you changed into something more presentable” she said as she grabbed his left arm that Wolfgang held up for her to grab.
“Just one question: how did you know my size?” he questioned.  “It’s simple” she smiled “I sized you up from the moment I met you” she replied.  “I hope you like pine green”

Two hours had passed since Schroeder woke up, just shortly before the very same trooper from earlier knocked on his door.  “I see that your awake, I’ll inform his lordship and the general that you will be joining us” the trooper saluted as he shut the door behind him.  With that done, Schroeder began to turn on the bathtub faucet.  It still amazed the young Captain that such technologies were available.  Under normal circumstances, his bath tub would have to be filled by bucket, but he didn’t care for that, especially since he was already half naked.
He tested the water for himself.  The water was fine enough to stand without getting oneself burned or chilled, so he then climbed in and began applying soap.  After thirty minutes of bathing, washing his hair and shaving over the wash basin, he immediately donned the dress uniform that was hung up on the coat rack.  It looked almost like his parade uniform from his days at the academy, epaulets and shoulder tassels along with bronze colored buttons for the jacket, except for the fact that it had a pin on it with a snarling wolf head and a pair of crossed lighting bolts on it.
“Must be the Wulfkorp logo” Schroeder said to himself out loud.  He then proceeded to put on the dress pants and the uniform.  After making sure he was proper he then stepped out of the room to the trooper from earlier, standing outside.  “Escort you to the dining hall sir” he said as if he was commanded to bring him there.  Schroeder motioned for him to lead the way and lead the way the trooper did.
Schroeder was being brought down the same ay he had come up: large, winding staircase that was down the hall, with a now empty hallway that was filled with the stain glass windows of the famous members of the Wulfcastle family and finally a stone walkway that overlooked the main courtyard near the main entrance, that lead to the centermost point of the building that was the main dining hall.
When the trooper opened the door, the room was magnificent.  It had a medieval-Germanic look to it complete with fireplace against the back wall, tapestries along the walls depicting the famous emperors of Germany and medieval banners hanging from the ceiling.  The dining tables were fixed so that it had a square look to it.  Schroeder had arrived just as everyone else did.  He saw Harbin dressed in a somewhat similar outfit to what he usually wore and Dr. Kaminski in the same uniform he had been wearing earlier, both of who were sitting at talking to each other at the far end of the left side of the table.
His eye then caught Sergeant Bruckner, dressed in a more cleaner looking uniform than he had earlier, along with Sheila Horton who was wearing jeans with no holes at all, a cowhide dinner jacket with steer-head tie around her neck.  To Schroeder’s amazement they kissed before Bruckner pulled out the chair for her and helped push her in, before he sat down next to her.
Schroeder walked up to Bruckner “I see your masculine charms with the women have finally paid off” Schroeder said as Bruckner turned around to stand up.  “They certainly have, and more so” Bruckner grinned.  “Honey, you don’t want to be telling him what we do in the sack, now do we?” Sheila stated politely.  “I guess that’s more so” they chuckled as Schroeder made that remark.  The doors opened again, showing Corporal Friedan and Dr. Hilda Schreiber entering the room.
Wolfgang was dressed in a pine green colored, simple tailor-made uniform that was more casual than military.  Dr. Schreiber had her hand in the crook of his left arm.  She was dressed in a plain white dress, whose blouse cover her legs, except for her feet and shoulder straps.  “Looks like you finally found yourself a woman” Schroeder said to Wolfgang.  “And one who isn’t some tavern wench” he said smiling back.  Hilda smiled as Schroeder tipped his hat to her.
Just as Corporal Freidan and Dr. Hilda Schreiber went to their sets near the end of the table closest to the main dining room door, another person came in through the main doors.  It was Helga, but not like he had ever seen her before.  She wore the most beautiful coral blue dress he had ever seen on her, that went left her shoulders exposed and manage also to cover up her magnificently large round breasts.  Her blouse was a match of coral blue with white stripes.  But what really caught his eye was the necklace she wore.  It had pearls on it with a seashell in the center of it.
“You still had the necklace I gave to you on your birthday?” he said with look of surprise on his face.  “I never forgot it, nor did I ever think of disposing of it” she said “it always reminded me of you” she said with a weak smile.  “Even after I broke off my marriage to you?” he asked quizzically.  “No Heinrich, it was my fault, you don’t need to keep telling yourself that” she said with an apologetic look on her face.  Schroeder put his right index finger up to her chin.  “I forgive you then” he said as she then smiled.
They then together walked hand in hand and sat next to Bruckner and Sheila.  Just as they did, a lone trooper next to a set of doors in the right hand corner of the room announced the arrival of Baron Ludwig von Wulfcastle and General Johann von Krieger.  Everyone stood up in the room as the Baron entered the room.  He was wearing a greenish-grey military dress uniform, with silver colored buttons and lapel pins, along with a series of medals.  The General followed behind him, wearing the same uniform he had on earlier.  As everyone bowed to him and the General, the baron motioned for them to take there seats just as cooks came out from a door at the baron’s right.
The meal consisted of a roast pig that was put in the center of the room, along with plates that had cooked goose and hasenpfeffer, sliced carrots covered in gravy and mashed potatoes.  Fruits were also made available for those who wanted it, as well as the finest wines were made available. “Drink up; I have plenty of fine wine shipped in from France” the baron said loud and proud.  After about an hour of dining and fine wine drinking, the baron clapped his hands loudly to grab everyone’s attention.
“Now that you have all had your fill, I’d like to propose a toast” the Baron said joyfully as Schroeder, Bruckner, Friedan, Harbin and Dr. Kaminski stood up with their wine glasses.  “I give this toast in honor of Dr. Kaminski’s and Dr. Schreiber’s successful surgery” the doctor then nodded his head in respect.  “To Harbin for his assistance in researching the stolen weapon” Harbin nodded his head as well.  “To our new recruits of our beloved Wulfkorp, Captain Heinrich Schroeder, Sergeant Hans Bruckner, Corporal Wolfgang Freidan and Cadet Wilhelm Schwartz, who isn’t here with us tonight” Schroeder and the others nodded in respect.  “And finally to the other Wulfkorp members, who weren’t able to make it tonight.  I salute thee” the Baron finished as he drank the wine along with the others.
“Captain Schroeder” the baron called out to him.  “I have a special gift for you from Ulrich.”  Schroeder had the same look of surprise on his face that Bruckner had at what the baron just said.  Before Schroeder could ask why, a trooper came up to him with a large case.  When the trooper opened it for him, he was amazed to find what was inside. “My cavalry saber!?” Schroeder responded with a look of surprise on his face.  “Not just your cavalry saber” von Krieger piped in “But a more new and improved version of it, go ahead and unsheathe it.”  Schroeder stood up to remove the sword from the box and then the sheath.  It was his cavalry sword, but different.  It was brand new looking and had saw-toothed edges on the sharp side rather than smoothed sharpened steel.
“I don’t understand” Bruckner said quizzically “at one point I thought he said that the captain was just a boy?”  Von Krieger and Lord Wulfcastle chuckled.  “He did say that, I was there” von Krieger continued with a chuckle “but what he didn’t say is how proud he was to have finally met a person, other than himself, that was able to stand up to that vile creature Steel Monger without, how he put it “without crapping one’s pant’s” he stated as such” the General said as he took a sip of fine wine.
“He actually said that?” Schroeder said as he looked surprised.  “Ulrich isn’t the emotion type, hon” Sheila stated.  “He’s about as hard as rock both inside out” she concluded.  “But inside he’s a good man.  His first experience with Steel Monger just shook the very nature of his reality” Harbin added in.  “You don’t face an abomination like that every day and expect to come back to reality.  Ulrich just has something of problem understanding that ever since he lost his men that day, now he devotes much of his time trying to destroy the thing, whenever he’s not testing new weapons” von Krieger said in between the puffs he took from his pipe.
“It makes me feel sorry for how I thought about him earlier” Schroeder said apologetically.  Helga tugged on his left arm “It doesn’t matter Heinrich” she said compassionately “I forgive you.  I just thought you and Bruckner were being insensitive jerks.”  Schroeder nodded, just as the baron clapped once more.  “Alright then, now that all have made peace with Ulrich’s grudges, how about a little song and dance?”
The guests were shown to a room right next to the dining hall which led to the ballroom.  Schroeder wondered if Helga would be joining him as a dance partner, but she shook her head and indicated for him to leave the room with her.  Schroeder shrugged, he knew Helga was never much for dancing, but she must have wanted to step out and talk more about the relationship.  With that being the case, he followed her out of the dining hall.
“I am going to my personal quarters, which is where I want you to go with me” she said.  Heinrich didn’t question why, so he just followed her anyway.  By the time they had left the dining hall, there was a full moon out.  It was beautiful, like Helga in her fine coral blue dress.  After following her down a series of hallways, they passed by the main work area where he had been earlier.  A few scientists were still conducting some experiments, but not as many as there were earlier.
They came to another hallway which leads pass the armory, training hall, shooting range and locker rooms.  “As you can see, the officer’s quarters are right up these stairs, but that’s not where my room is, it’s right past there” she explained.  After going up the spiral staircase, the reached the hallway where the officer’s quarters were, but instead of taking a right where the officer’s quarters were they took a left instead.  “This is where I and most of the scientist sleep.  Although many of scientists refuse to be far from their work and often bunk with the soldiers.  Often at times they don’t sleep for days due to their obsession with their research and the Baron often orders the troops to force them away form their experiments for their own good.”
Schroeder didn’t seem all that interested “I know it’s nice that we are back on talking terms, but I don’t think you brought me here to talk about the habits of your fellow scientists and researchers.  Are we here to talk about something?” Schroeder asked firmly but politely.  Helga nodded “this is my room” she said as she was opening the door.  As Schroeder entered the room he noticed how well it looked.
It was double bed with blue and white sheets, a single row of book shelves that probably had the various scientific subjects that Helga pursued a large chest of drawers for her clothes and cabinet for her dresses, coats and makeup, another door was to the left side of the room indicating the washroom.  A pair of windows was on the left and right side of the bed with the moonlight shining out of them.  As he was observing the room, Helga lit an oil lamp on the side of her bed.
“Heinrich, lock the door” she asked.  Schroeder turned around to the lock the door.  He turned the lock underneath the knob and brought down the heavy bar, which barred the door.  “Interesting security system, but it’s quite useful for keeping intruders out.  Just as he said those words, Helga walked right up to him and kissed.  It surprised him completely, but he didn’t refuse and began kissing back.
She then parted with him and put her head on chest.  “Heinrich I just wanted to tell you again I’m sorry for what I did to you so long again” she said sadly.  “You already told me it was my fault?” he said sympathetically.  “Yes, but I want to keep telling you that so you can stop blaming yourself” she said as she began to sob as she looked up at him.  “I just didn’t want you to die as my uncle and my brother.  Even though there would be nothing you could do to save them, I just didn’t want to be a widow with no children” she said with tears rolling down her eyes.
“I wouldn’t want you to be that either, but ever if I wanted your hand in marriage, it would have made the Braun family just as contemptible as my family.  After what my bastard of an older brother did, frontline combat was the only solution to restore my family honor and I would have then asked for your hand in marriage.  I went on for years since the marriage was called off, blaming myself for not having for not considering how you felt about me and the dangers that came with being a frontline soldier.  But tonight, I still forgive you because I loved as I have always” Schroeder finished with a smile.
Helga’s sobbing stopped as she looked up at Heinrich with a smile “I am so happy to hear that and I still love you, so much so that I would never go for another man until I was able to make amends.  With that being said” she backed off to remove her gloves and began to remove her shoulder straps holding up her dress, letting it fall to the floor it to the floor around her ankles to reveal her naked body.  Her body was heavenly looking in the moon light, showing off her ivory colored skin, large round breasts and firm buttocks with smooth thighs.  She stepped out the dress that was around her ankles and walked up to Schroeder.  She pressed her breasts against him to kiss him.
“That being said, I want us to make love together and reignite our passion together” she said as kept on kissing him and undoing the buttons on his uniform.  “Hard to disagree with you on that one” he said between kisses and him undressing himself.  When he was completely unclothed, he dropped her on back onto the bed, where she was sweating heavily and her magnificent breasts were rising and failing with every breath she took.  He laid on top her panting form, pressing his chest against hers and spent the next several hours making sweet passionate love, to someone who was no longer a former lover.
